COMMONWEALTH GAMES Tournament this Weekend were a great success.
Great tournament, I saw great play and progession from everyone at the tournament.
The players represented the Vienna program, the coaches and the parents well.
The U-15's made it to the Plate Final by beating BRYC with a late try after knocking on the door most of the second half and a game saving try.
Here is a note from the Tournament Director: NOTE The special thanks to our own Buzz McClain one of our U-13 coaches.
Hi, folks. Here's a quick recap of this past weekend's Rugby Virginia Youth Tournament, which is now part of the Coventry Commonwealth Games of Virginia.
Thanks to all the players, coaches, and parents from all the teams that made for a very competitive tournament. We had nearly 40 teams involved, all playing good rugby whether touch or tackle. See below for the list of the champions and finalists within each age group.
Thanks to the Fairfax County Park Authority for making an exception to allow us to create a full-size field in the baseball outfield for use on Sunday. They bear no responsibility for the half-a**ed goalposts, though. ;-)
Thanks to Kurt Mockenhaupt, Rugby Virginia board member and all-around swell guy, for his support of the Rugby Va tournament and its inclusion in the Coventry Commonwealth Games of Virginia.
Thanks to Pat Herrity, Springfield rep to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, former rugby player, and current rugby dad, for his support of the Rugby Va tournament as well as the proclamation to make Saturday and Sunday "Coventry Commonwealth Games of Virginia Day" in Fairfax County.
Thanks to Buzz McClain and all the Potomac Referee's Society refs who came out to officiate tackle games on Sunday. Definitely a plus for everyone involved.
Thanks to Bruce Ferratt the athletic trainer, who provided medical support part of Saturday and all day Sunday. He was a little busier than we would have liked on Sunday, and hopefully all the kids who got a little banged up are okay.
Thanks to Lineout Video and Rising Star Imaging for being there. If you're interested in purchasing game video or photographs, contact them directly (see contact info on the RV tournament page at http://www.facebook.com/l/;www.sycva.com/rugby).
Special thanks to all the SYC Rugby volunteers who helped with fields, set-up, concessions, merchandise sales, horn-blowing, etc.
Extra special thanks to rugby supermom Patti Griffin, who managed the SYC Rugby volunteer effort for me. Couldn't have done it without her. (Patti is the proud mom of Boys U-13 tackle MVP Tyler Griffin.)
And thanks to anyone else I may have missed. No offense intended.

Vienna Rugby,
Summer Sport 2009
Rugby, for boys and girls ages 8-15, is a summer sport. Three age groups from U11 through U15 will play touch rugby (U11) and both touch and tackle (other age groups).
While rugby may have a rough and tough image, the game is truly safe due to rules changes for younger players, and coaching and refereeing emphasis on safety as a top priority. More than safe, it is a fun sport where boys and girls play together in a team setting, where all the kids get to handle the ball while playing offense and defense. The coaches have rugby and youth sports experience to provide an exciting learning environment for the players.
The teams will compete against eleven other northern Virginia youth rugby clubs, some of whom have been in existence for the last 6 years and some of whom, like VYI, are new summer sports. Check out the VYI Rugby web pages for more information.

If you have an older player there are teams nearby you can join.
Youth Rugby is a distinct age group and season (ages 8-15 during the summer) from high school rugby (9th-12th grade during the spring, and yes, we have teams that draw students from Oakton, Madison, Centreville, Westfield, and Chantilly, as well as other high schools). Boys and girls are invited to play this exciting sport, with both touch rugby and tackle rugby available depending on age group and interest.
What is youth rugby?...
...A GREAT SPORT FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES!!!
Youth Rugby is a fast, exciting, high scoring game. Youth Rugby emphasizes FUN - running with the ball, running in support, passing, kicking. No matter what position you play, you will get your hands on the ball. You will pass to your teammates, and your teammates will pass to you. You will have FUN! You will make tags (touch rugby) or tackles (older players), and you will get tagged and tackled. You will have more FUN! You will learn to think quickly about what to do next. Team skills, offense, defense, scrums, lineouts, rucks, mauls - did we say FUN? Rugby is all about FUN! And scoring? Let's not forget scoring - who doesn't like that? Lots of scoring for everyone on the team! Did we mention FUN?
Youth Rugby is a also great way to stay in shape or get in shape for your fall sport. You will be fit and ready to go for the fall. Stay active this summer, two to three times a week, every week from around the time school lets out until school starts. Play RUGBY!
Players under age 11 will play the touch version of the game. Players 11 and older, depending on the team you join, can play the touch or tackle version of the game, or both. You've seen rugby on TV? Well, it's not quite like that, but it's pretty close. All rules of rugby apply with rule modifications in the interest of safety and considering the player's age, size, strength, and skill level. Most coaches have USA rugby coaching certification and safety is number one.
Kids, tell your parents you want to play rugby this summer. Stay active, stay fit, stay busy. Make new friends, learn a new sport.
Youth Rugby since before 2000...
...and still growing.
Youth Rugby has been part of the northern Virginia youth sports scene since 2000 (and several years before that in Maryland), having been sponsored by Southwestern Youth Association (SYA; Centreville), Springfield Youth Club (SYC), with Alexandria and Winchester entering the league in 2003.
In addition to the existing clubs, 2006 sees a large expansion to other youth sports organizations (YSO's) in northern Virginia: Chantilly Youth Association (CYA), Vienna Youth, Inc (VYI), Braddock Road Youth Club (BRYC), Fairfax Police Youth Club (FPYC), and Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association (FHYAA), bringing the number of northern Virginia teams to nine and more than doubling the previous total.
